30 Days of Marvel | Day 8: Favorite Artist
If you haven’t been reading Hawkeye, go get it. Seriously. I’ve read a few of the books that David Aja has done the art for now and I can honestly say that he has blown my mind. While there are many very amazing comics artists out in the world and I would struggle to pick just one, today it is David Aja.
Aja’s work sets his books apart. He uses minimalism in a way I’ve never seen before. His art is very expressive and his people look real. If Danny is making a stupid face in Immortal Iron Fist (which he is a lot) Aja doesn’t shy away from it. His characters pop off the page because they’re fun to watch. His page layouts for Hawkeye are visually stimulating in a way that I can’t even express. He makes pages with 13 panels work and offsets them with splash pages that have more going on in them than my brain can process sometimes.
Also, his designs for characters like the redesigns for Hawkeye #9 (“Girls”) are spot on without being too on the nose. He creates variation without getting away from the characters that we see in the same outfit in every issue in most other books.
